Holiday Hangover!

Bye Bye! stressful job, non stop chattering friends, intruding relatives, unsatisfied employers, regretful past, anxious present, worrisome future. And ya almost forgot painful diet n exercise.

Hello! basking sun, starry nights, cloud-capped mountains, silver rivers n singing brooks, enchanting strangers, vibrant cultures, mouth watering cuisines and unforgettable memories.

Some love leisure, some adventure, some exploring , idea of holidays differs from person to person. But whatever type of “time out” you choose it refreshes, rejuvenates and if you observe carefully you will see a change in your perspective and identify split personalities in you.

How personality? I kind of realised characteristics that come out in every vacation which my daily routine kind of keeps them hidden.

Leadership : Oh yes, a trip does bring out your leadership qualities. Obviously this won’t work if the whole trip is dependant on the travel agent. But when you and your group are on your own you will see how your planning and organising skills come in front and others follow. How everyone points out to different directions and you shove the map on their face and insist on taking this lane and yes everyone follows. Hopefully you reach the right place.

I am not saying the whole trip should be decided by you, but the role of follower and leader will keep interchanging.

Adaptive: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I was in Rome few months back n was surprised to know that bare shoulder and bare legged people were prohibited from entering some of their sacred places. And here I thought only Asian countries are disciples of tradition, this was an eye opener for me.

Anyway no matter which country/state you belong to, in any foreign land you will have to follow their rules and you do. Can’t deny the existence of a adaptive personality.

Ambitious : If you asked me to take the steps of a 21 storey residential complex to reach someone’s apartment on the 21st floor because of an elevator problem. Sorry! That ain’t happening. But ask me to climb the Eiffel Tower or the 463 odd steps up the Florence’s Duomo, you will find me all excited to reach the top even though I might be huffing and puffing mid way. But I will reach there no matter what.

Culturally Fit : I think it would have been boring if we all spoke, ate, wore, danced or listened to same things. I had started saying Bonjour in Paris or Hola in Spain or Ciao (pronounced as Chao) in Florence. We all mean the same but say it in so many different ways. Found a new love in exploring cultures and finding similarities between theirs and mine.

Problem Solving Ability: Let’s face it not all will go as per plan. The weather might go bad, the travel medium might get delayed or worse cancelled or someone gets sick. Here your ability to still manage and come out without ruining your trip will get a pat on the back.

Disciplined n Punctual : If going on a trip organised by travel agent with other groups, see how disciplined and punctual you become. You obviously don’t want others to grumble because you are late nor you want to be left behind. Time management also comes in forefront here.

Adventurous/ Risk Taker / Fearless : Not all are adventurous or a risk takers in life. But when you see that beautiful scenic picture from that mountain top you do gear up your hiking shoes. Or when you see a person exhilarated after sky diving or river rafting or bungee jumping the list is endless, Oh you want to experience it, don’t you?

Extrovert : If you think you are a shy person and not the one to take the first step in interacting with others. Think again.

While waiting in long queues or travelling on long journeys everyone is so much in a happy vacation mood, you will be surprised at how conversations start up with just a smile and stay till the end of your journey.

When you loose your way, you have no choice but to ask for directions. That weird looking cuisine is going to make you ask what it’s made of. When in a culturally different land, you will have ten thousand questions as to why they do what they do.

And here you thought vacation trips are just a time spent in tranquility. Nope you are always on training, this would be “On The Trip Training”. Heheh.

So,

The most to the point and clear, exhilarating take on the personality aspects of travel and vacation. Few like me travel vicariously reading such articles.
